How to Create a DIY Logo in Canva
Although I don't usually advocate the 'I just need a logo' mentality (because branding is truly SO much more than your logo)...
Sometimes, you really do just need a logo. And sometimes you need to D.I.Y. (do it yourself).
So, I'm going to show you how to create a quickie logo using Canva, so you launch your biz right now, and hire a designer later.
YOU MIGHT NEED A DIY LOGO IF…
You've started your business already and need something temporary while building your visual brand.
You're just testing the waters and unsure if this whole entrepreneur thing is something you want to do.
You just need something to hold you over until you can afford to invest in real branding.
HOW TO DESIGN A DIY LOGO IN CANVA
Step 1: Create a free account with Canva.
I love Canva for simple design tasks, and highly recommend upgrading to their professional plan for around $12 per month. However, you can accomplish this particular design task without the upgrade.
Step 2: Establish some initial design guidelines.
Fonts: Choose one primary font (make it fancy) and one secondary font (keep it minimal).
Colors: Select a simple color palette with one primary color and one secondary color.
Step 3: Create the logo in black and white.
In my logo example, I’m using the business name of ‘Margot Sloan / Personal Styling’.
The first line should be your name or business name (Margot Sloan). The second line is optional - a short description of what you do (Personal Styling)
Play with the spacing between the letters (aka Kerning) until it's just right.
Step 4: Play with color.
Using your palette, try adding some color!
1. Keep it simple.
2. Use a max of 2 fonts in different styles (i.e. don't use two different script fonts - use one script and one sans serif)
3. Text only - avoid using any imagery, symbols, or icons at this point - if you change your mind (and you probably will), then you're stuck with this.
4. Max of 2 colors, but make sure it's legible in one color.
